Elle
I think the normal process is solid – liquid – gas. Think ice, water, fog/steam. Skipping water phase is sublimation.
Sara Treat
Dear Elle,
Thank you for your comment.
Sublimation is a chemical process.
In simple(r) terms, it is where a solid turns into a gas, immediately, without passing through the liquid stage in between.
Loves, Sara.
Casey
What’s your thoughts on the Epson ET-3760?
Sara Treat
Dear Casey,
Thank you for your comment.
This model is one of Epson’s best-selling printers because it comes with 2 years of ink. It’s easy to setup and navigate thanks to the intuitive 2.4-inch color display.
It’ a decent printer with basic features. The best part about this printer is the wireless connectivity. You will be able to print anywhere, anytime from your tablet or smartphone.
It also includes wifi direct and Ethernet. ET-3760 is suitable for home use. However, it lacks support for flash memory drives. Also, it’s not as fast as other Epson printers.
Hope this helps! Have a lovely day and stay safe.
Love, Sara.

You fail to mention which printers come as sub printers and which have to be converted with empty ink tanks(that often aren’t compatible) and sub ink. I have the beloved wf 7710 and it is a real pain to change the cartridges and to add ink. That printer is smart and it knows when you aren’t using Epson ink. Yes, you can override it, but it’s so messy! Does Epson make cartridges that have sub ink? That would be fabulous.
Sara Treat
Dear Karol,
Thank you for your comment.
You’re right! I haven’t mentioned which Epson printers come as sub printers and which have to be turned. It’s because most Epson printers can become sub printers.
It can be hard and messy. However, it’s doable, especially if your printer is new and hasn’t been loaded with ink. And yes, you can find Epson sub-ink cartridges at Amazon.
Have a wonderful day and stay safe.
Love, Sara.
Jeanie Davis
Thinking about getting into sublimation printing. I want to be able to heat transfer to shirt, cups, wood (if that’s possible), canvas, etc. Everything I’ve seen so far is stirring me toward the Epson printers but I’ve also seen the bundles buy Sawgrass, how do you feel about those? If you were to put together a sublimation start-up kit what would be on it?
Thank you for your help!
Sara Treat
Dear Jeanie,
Thank you for your comment.
Epson produces top-notch printers. Sawgrass has also good products. If you’re looking for a sublimation printer, keep in mind that Sawgrass units are made to be used for sublimation.
Epson printers, on the other hand, need to be “converted” to sublimation by using third party ink. Thus, Sawgrass makes a better choice for your needs. Also, check screen printing machines.
You will need one for your start-up kit. If you’re a beginner, I would suggest buying cheaper equipment. SAWGRASS VIRTUOSO SG400 Sublimation Printer makes a great choice for t-shirts.
You can combine this sublimation printer with Yudu Personal Screen Printing Machine. Or Merchmakr All-in-One Screen Printing Kit for T-Shirts. They’re perfect for small businesses.
Have a lovely day and stay safe.
Love, Sara.
Manuel Hernandez jr
On the Brother MFC-J995DW, is the regular ink that comes in the box ok for sublimation printing? Meaning its good to go out of the box? Or do we need to convert it with cartridges? We bought the printer but have not been able to find sublimation ink and dont want to open the box if the ink in the box wont work so we can return it.
Sara Treat
Dear Manuel,
Thank you for your comment.
Yes, you can use the regular ink that’s included for sublimation printing.
Have a lovely day and stay safe.
Love, Sara.
Leslie Mendez
Same! I just purchased this one off of Amazon and was searching for empty cartridges to replace with sublimation ink. I couldn’t find it anywhere! So, I can just hook this up out of the box print on sublimation paper and heat on to any polyester surface?
Sara Treat
Dear Leslie,
Thank you for your comment.
Yes, you can! Please, share your results once you’re done!
Have a lovely day and stay safe.
Love, Sara.
KEVIN J SAUCIER
Hi, Just wanted to add some clarity. I have used Dye sublimation printers for years. Unless the definitions have change (which they apparently seem to have done), Sublimation is when heat is applied to a solid (your dye pigment) and it turns directly into a gas it then hits you printing surface where it suddenly cools and then turns back into a solid. All these liquid ink printers being called sublimation printers does not make sense. It feels like a scam, they are trying to cash in on a term that consumers might not have a good understanding of. But hay maybe someone somewhere in the tech world decided it would be good PR and help them charge more for printers…. 🙂
Sara Treat
Dear Kevin,
Thank you for your input.
The printers in this article can be converted into sublimation printers if they’re brand new and haven’t been filled with any other ink, so you can inject sublimation ink.
But you’re right, it feels like a scam because they’re presented on the market as sublimation printers. In the future, I will review printers that don’t require conversion.
Again, thanks for sharing your opinion.
Have a lovely day and stay safe.
Love, Sara.
